Yesterday my recent TedX talk was posted on YouTube. WOW! Exciting and scary at the same time. Speaking on a TedX stage was a dream come true. Watching myself doing a TedX talk is another story. My inner critic tried to take over, I shut her down, well, as best I could. Who knew they’d actually put footage of me from behind in the video. Oy vey, didn’t see that one coming. My talk along with my big butt is there for all the world to see. Today I want to relish the feeling of accomplishment and to remember what it took to get there. Before I forget how nervous I felt before going on the stage, the excitement and confidence I felt as the words flowed from me to the audience and the many hours I prepared and practiced so that I could give my best. More importantly the connection I felt with the other speakers, what I learned from them and the inspiration I now feel because of them. Being on the TedX stage was a goal of mine and it feels amazing to have achieved it. Yet it’s so much more than the accolades of having spoken on the red carpet. It’s the connection between a small yet diverse group of like minded people some who have overcome harsh realities I can’t even imagine to brilliant young minds that blow me away with their intelligence and achievements as teenagers and young adults. This has been an incredible, intense, transformative journey. I now feel a greater sense of urgency to focus on my goals, to do and give more to help my community. Being a TedX speaker is demanding, it requires dedication and commitment to meet deadlines and practice until you feel you’ve got nothing left.
This experience has been life changing for me and I hope inspirational and cathartic for those who saw it and will view my talk. Because for me, it’s about helping people and organizations embrace change through my message. Otherwise it’s not an idea worth sharing. Thank you TedX for allowing my voice to be heard so together we improve and transform lives locally and globally. Here’s the link if you’d like to view it. https://youtu.be/i1zlw-ngvB4
Wow! An amazing talk came to me as I was walking the other day. Too bad I didn’t record it. I really should learn to bring my phone with me when I walk so I can capture ideas when I receive them. I prefer to keep the distractions at bay while I’m walking hence why my phone is typically left in my car. There’s something about being fully present (at least as much as I can manage) when I’m in nature. It fills me with a sense of connection and joy.
So instead I sit at the computer and draft and re-draft my talk. So much for my outline, this talk has taken on a life of it’s own. Often that’s the way it works with me. I start with a specific outline only for it to evolve and change as I work on my presentation or talk. It’s part of creativity, staying open and curious and allowing ideas to unfold instead of forcing them to fit into preformed box.
Don’t get me wrong, outlines are important. I always start with an outline when I’m creating a talk, workshop or book, they help me to stay focused and on topic. Otherwise the monkey mind takes over and I’m all over the place. Oh I just saw the BEST recipe for chicken on Facebook. Wait! Wait! See what I mean?
Outlines are definitely valuable as is speaking from my heart because the ideas that come through my heart I believe are inspired by my soul. It’s why ideas flow to me when I’m walking, it’s the connection I feel to the Earth and the Universe when I’m in nature. For some people they get great ideas when they’re in the shower or while driving.
What gets your juices flowing? What helps you remain curious and open when you have a project or task you’re working on? I encourage to do more of it and see what ideas come to you. Think I’ll go for a walk and take my phone with me. 🙂
So we are a couple of days away from a New Year. Are you excited about the upcoming year or just ready to leave this one behind? As I’m writing this I have a laundry room that’s flooded due to workmen breaking a pipe that goes to the well that supplies water to my house.
The simple replacement of the washer and dryer has now become a project. Just another adventure is the saga of this “new” house. I have visions of a Chevy Chase movie. Any screen writers among my readers? Add this to the list of snafu’s since we moved and there’s a comedy in the making.
2016 was another year of big shifts for me. Some were welcome like conducting my first full day workshop, moving to a new home I really like (even with the snafu’s occuirng within the first month) and meeting a wonderful man I’m now dating to saying goodbye to my dad within six months of my mom passing. It’s had its share of ups and downs for sure. I’m ready to let this year go and start fresh in 2017.
What about you? Are you ready to start the New Year off clean and clear or is there garbage you’re holding onto from 2016? Just like garbage it’s time to put it in the trash and let it go. I mean it. If you’re holding onto regret, anger, worry, resentment, guilt, sorrow or any other fear based emotion from anything in 2016 or before don’t carry it into the New Year.
Now more than ever its vital to release it and let it go and start fresh not just with the New Year but every day. Every single day is a new beginning, an opportunity to begin again to have a fresh perspective of your life. That’s why it’s called the present.
Before the ball drops to bring in 2017 try this simple yet powerful exercise to let go of any garbage from 2016.
Write a list of anything or anyone (including yourself) you feel frustrated, angry, resentful, jealous, sad, overwhelmed, guilty or shameful about from 2016. Let it rip as you write about it, no holding back. I spent a couple of hours this morning getting it out and onto paper. And I’ve even thought of more since then. If you can’t do it in one sitting break it up into smaller segments like 15 minutes in the morning and evening over the next few days. You’ll notice you’ll feel lighter once you do this. Before the New Year burn it and release it to the Universe so you start your year without holding onto thoughts that no longer serve you.
I’d love to hear how you feel when you try this. Feel free to comment on my Facebook page.
If you’re looking to create your Vision for 2017 or would love a day to hone in the Vision you’ve already created, please join me on January 14th for a one day retreat to crystallize your Vision for the upcoming year. Learn more here.
Last Thursday I moved. It’s been five years since I last moved and somehow I’d forgotten how much time, effort and energy it takes. No surprise moving is considered in the top 5 stressors you experience in life. In fact, it’s listed by some experts as MORE stressful than divorce.
Who likes packing and unpacking? Not me. Honestly I detest it. If you like it you’re welcome to come over and help me unpack and get organized. Really, feel free, I’d love to have your company and an extra set of hands. Not interested, hmmm can’t say I blame you.
Sunday night I went to bed exhausted hoping to get a good nights sleep. Maybe its the new environment but I haven’t been sleeping well since moving day. Around 4 am I was awakened hearing my cat running around my bedroom. He was next to my bed and it sounded like he was playing with something. I rolled over and put my hand out to see what he had and instantly felt a sharp pain in one of my fingers. I yelled “Ouch” and could feel my finger bleeding. “What the hell” I thought as I got out of bed and walked into the bathroom. When I flipped on the light I could see I’d been bitten. And then I saw my cat chasing something gray with a tail.
REALLY? I have to deal with this right now, shit. My finger’s bleeding and throbbing and I’m so freakin tired. Before I can barricade it in the bathroom it runs and hides under a dresser. And I decide there’s no way I’m going to try and get it out by myself and not now. Sox my cat will make sure it’s not going anywhere. So I made a meager attempt to go back to sleep.
Turns out what I thought was a mouse was a red flying squirrel. Fortunately I found an expert to remove and release it. It was no small feat. There’s no way I could’ve done it.
So what does moving and a flying squirrel have in common? Both stressed me out. Truth is I’ve allowed myself to feel stressed because in reality it’s my choice. Now you might say, “Carolyn really, that would stress anyone out.”
True as humans we’re prone to feel stress during change or when the unexpected happens. However my reaction is completely up to me and that’s true for you too. And that’s the GOOD news. Just like me you’re always given the opportunity to choose your thoughts and feelings, to honor your emotions without being victim to them.
No matter what’s stressing you out you have the power to tame it and return to place of peace. If you’re struggling with your own flying squirrel schedule a complimentary Name It To Change It session with me. Schedule here.
And if you change your mind and want to help me unpack let me know. 🙂
Last night my friend Tina and I were supposed to launch our Web show Soar into Power and Freedom. We were so excited to start this community for entrepreneurs and mid-lifers in career transition. We spent time discussing our Vision and Mission, planning our topics for the upcoming weeks ahead. Now we were ready to go LIVE for the first time in a few minutes.
And then there was a GLITCH, a technical glitch making it impossible for us to stream live through the platform we were using. We logged off and back on, tried different links, called a tech friend and the clock kept ticking. Nothing was working and by 8:20 we accepted it just wasn’t going to happen last night.
Ahhhh, SHIFT happens, doesn’t it? And sometimes when it does it’s REALLY frustrating. But you know what? It’s life! Shift is happening ALL the time. Change is so inherent, so natural it’s amazing how much stress, dis-ease, and grief it causes in humans.
The truth is its how you choose to react to it that makes it good, bad or indifferent. Your perception creates your belief around whatever shift is currently occurring in your life. I admit last night I felt frustrated when we couldn’t get the show to go live. And yet I didn’t allow it to ruin my night. In fact a friend called me a little later and we had a great conversation. I’d let go of it because I know we’ll get the tech issues worked out and launch next week.
Here are some tools for you to use when SHIFT happens in your life:
- Let yourself FEEL whatever emotion is coming up. If you need to remove yourself from the situation in order not to strangle someone, go punch a pillow, cry in a bathroom stall, do it. It’s HEALTHY to RELEASE your feelings in a constructive way.
- Accept the SHIFT for what it is. It’s a change, and change is constant. Your life won’t end if you can’t have Cheerios one morning, or coffee, or your green drink. Simple examples I realize but you get the point.
- Focus on the opportunity not the loss. When one door closes another one opens……ALWAYS. Look for the door that’s opening it’s there but you have to turn towards it instead of looking back wishing, wanting things to be different or the way they were. Memories, like the corners of my mind……… (You get bonus points if you can tell me where those lyrics are from).
- Be thankful for the GOOD in your life including YOURSELF. I guarantee you’ve got WAY more good going on in your life than bad. Take time to appreciate it and yourself for ALL the good that’s already there within and for you. Did you know writing down 3 things you’re grateful for on a daily basis will change your life for the better? Your HAPPINESS will definitely increase for one.
As long as you’re alive SHIFT is bound to happen. You, my friend have the POWER to choose whether to let it drag you down or open the door of opportunity for you. And if you’re struggling with a SHIFT in your life, schedule a complimentary NAME IT TO CHANGE IT strategy session with me today.
P.S. We will be launching Soar into Power and Freedom next Tuesday, November 22 at 8 pm EST. I’d love for you to join us. You can connect with us here.
I can’t remember an election that’s caused so much discord and pain. On my Face book feed alone I’ve seen emotions ranging from grief, anger, shock, gloating to downright nastiness.
There’s been ugly name calling, accusations, people un-friending friends and family all because of differing political views? Really? I thought our Constitution was based on freedom of speech and for ALL people to share their views.
There’s so much F.E.A.R. being expressed by people on both sides. It saddens me to realize so many people are struggling with the results from this election.
Are you feeling stressed, worried, and angry? No matter what your reaction to this election is one thing I can guarantee is that how you currently feel will change because our emotions are constantly changing. The key is to allow yourself to feel whatever’s coming up and not get attached to it. The more you can be an observer of your emotions the less control your ego has over you.
Why do I say that? Because when you’re so caught up in your emotions particularly negative ones you’ve lost control and the ego’s taken over. Ever watch a toddler have a temper tantrum? I’ve seen a lot of people acting like toddlers on Face book recently.
The ego wants you to feel separate from your Self and others and that’s where F.E.A.R. (Feelings Experienced As Resistance) starts to take over and you begin to lose your connection to your inner guidance and to others.
One thing I know for sure is there’s over 324,981,031 people currently living in this culturally and geographically diverse land called the United States. UNITED being the Key word here. We’re a Nation of human beings sharing this beautiful land. Even though we may look different and have opposing beliefs and values at the core we’re very much the same. So instead of focusing on our differences how about we focus on what we have in common?
Stressing over a result you don’t like doesn’t serve you or anyone else. So here are some tips for reducing your stress.
1. If you’re unhappy with the election results its O.K. Get your feelings out in a positive way. Journal it, talk with a friend BUT don’t be abusive to people who have a different point of view. It doesn’t serve you or them. Hate begets hate. Only love through compassion and understanding heals, unites and helps all of us to create a stronger, more united country.
2. Accept what is, complaining about it doesn’t change it. Focus on what you can do to create the change you want to see in this country. It all starts within.
3. Come back to the present. We have no idea what is going to occur over the next four years and worrying about it serves no positive purpose. Bring your awareness to your life today, how much good is in it and trust that by placing your attention and efforts on the positive currently in your life you’ll experience greater peace of mind which impacts your life, your relationships and your community.
During this transition let L.O.V.E. (Loving Our-self Valuing Everything) be the guiding force in your life because LOVE truly is the most powerful force in the Universe. And this I know for sure.
If you’re struggling with a change or transition claim your complimentary NAME IT TO CHANGE IT session here. You’ll be surprised how much you can clear in 20 minutes.
